has always wanted. and good morning, america. hello to robin at home. josh is off today. it's great to have amy robach, and bill weir here, back from the inauguration. what a day it was yesterday, huh? >> good to be here. it was fun. >> a lot of excitement in washington yesterday. a lot of energy there, as the president gave his speech. walking up the capitol steps. and look at what was happening out on the mall. almost a million people out on the mall. not as many as four years ago. and the president, trying to savor every moment yesterday. his family, as well, was having a lot of fun. especially during that parade. there we see -- that's malia, right? there's malia, doing instagram. and sasha, as well. they were having fun chewing gum. they were going to enjoy this day yesterday. they certainly did.

today, the work begins for the president's second term. >> gum, lip gloss and cell phones. average teens and tweens, right. we also have some astonishing video from overnight. a terrifying moment during the afternoon commute. this woman here, she faints right on to the track. look at that. oh. she's okay. but wait until you hear how she was rescued. wow. >> it's scary to watch. a real hero there. and we're so excited. jennifer lopez is taking over our second hour. you do not want to miss that. it's going to be spicy. >> all right. we might need some spice. we have some very cold temperatures, dangerous temperatures, actually, freezing much of the united states right now. sam is tracking the very latest for us. sam? >> yeah, anything that will warm you up. 19 states, by the way, from north dakota, to north carolina, all the way into maine, have these advisories, these windchill advisories. look at it. international falls at 38 below zero. that's the way it feels right now. charleston, came up to one degree from zero. over the past couple of hours. pittsburgh, good morning. it feels like it's seven below this morning. and new york, step outside.

it feels like it's in the single digits. here's this cold air. basically the idea here is, some of this cold air will drop in the south. as it came in, it had enough punch with these winds and a little bit of snow to snarl traffic and cause some big accidents, in just about one-quarter of the country. take a look. overnight, arctic air and blowing snow made for treacherous travel for the northeastern quarter of the nation. in ohio, three major pileups. more than 150 cars, trucks and tractor-trailers, slamming into each other in whiteout conditions. >> these cars just kept coming. we're sitting there, at the mercy of god. and this guy just hit us head-on. >> reporter: and this massive crash in cincinnati. 86 cars in all, left a 12-year-old girl dead. further north in cleveland, howling polar winds sent this 200-year-old tree crashing into a home. the same winds whipped up winds on lake erie.

and caused blizzard conditions on parts of lake michigan. >> you can't see in front of you. you can't see the cars. >> reporter: in pontiac, michigan, the roof of the silverdome was under renovation. this morning, it's in tatters. shredded by winds. bitter windchills in places like fargo, north dakota, again, reached 35 degrees below zero on monday. and this cold air is spreading south and east. >> i'm definitely ready for the sun. >> this cold air is in place. it came in with the strong winds. so the question now is, how far south does it go? over the next 24 hours, we'll get as far south as atlanta. there will be some frost and freeze warnings down in north florida, as well. a pocket of cold air that goes to the deep south and seems to last. >> a lot of the country affected. sam, thanks very much. we're going to turn to president obama, now, and what's in store for the second term after yesterday's inaugural. the speech, a call to action. and uncompromising annunciation of liberal principles. the question, now, what can get done on those big issues like gun control, gay rights, and climate change?

abc's jon karl joins us from the white house. liberals were cheering yesterday. republicans, not so much. >> reporter: that's right, george. the president has set the tone for his second term. he went big. he went lofty. he went ambitious. and he went unmistakably liberal. over and over, president obama echos his campaign slogan. >> together. together we discover. together. >> reporter: with that, he invited all americans to celebrate the changing landscape of american culture. >> we have always understood that when times change, so must we. but preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action. >> reporter: he unapologetically laid out a progressive agenda. promising discussion on climate change, fighting poverty, equal

pay for women, and immigration. >> centuries-long debate about the role of government of all-time. but it does require us to act in our time. >> reporter: and for the first time ever in an inaugural address, the president specifically mentioned gay rights. >> our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. for, if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another, must be equal, as well. >> reporter: but obama, four years ago, talked about the audacity of hope, now gives a nod to reality. reminding his most fervent supporters that progress requires compromise. >> we must act knowing that our work will be imperfect. we must act knowing that today's victories will be only partial. >> reporter: before he headed back into the capitol, president obama stopped to look in awe at that amazing view of the national mall. >> take a look one more time. i'm not going to see this again. >> reporter: afterwards, the obama family took in the parade in a decidedly less formal way.

dancing, snapping photos. and even chewing gum. and while all those hundreds of thousands of people who filled the mall have now helped president obama win his last campaign, the last campaign he says he will ever run, he's still counting on their support building a grassroots organization to get things done. and let's get to the balls now. and the show-stopping moment when the first lady stepped out in that red gown, dancing to jennifer hudson, singing one of the president's favorites. cecilia vega was there for the whole show. ♪ listen, i >> reporter: on stage, the president mouthed the words. ♪ i'm so in love with you >> reporter: to a song he knows oh, so, well. this time, he left the inaugural-size serenade to none other than jennifer hudson.

>> we asked him all the time, do you feel safe? do you feel safe going? if you don't feel safe, don't go. he said, oh, i feel safe. nothing's happened there for so long. >> reporter: among the americans able to get out, was steven wysocki of colorado. whose wife told clayton sandell, of his harrowing tale. >> my feeling of it is he's been to hell and back. >> reporter: his wife says her husband hid from the terrorists in his office at the gas plant, often under his desk, before making a run for it. >> he was there, in hiding, for about two and a half days. was within two or three feet of some of the terrorists at times. some of his friends didn't make it. there were a couple of times where he said he truly thought he was going to die. >> reporter: the leader of the al qaeda group behind the attack is now the number one target in a rapidly expanding u.s./french military operation near his base, in the african country of mali, where the first transport planes were put into action on monday.

his second wife, betty, in 2008. prosecutors have painted a damming picture, saying shurmur bludgeoned her. i didn't stage an event. betty began to undo her seat belt, he said. as she did so, a deer came out to the right. we then made it to the guardrail. the 63-year-old former methodist pastor, said he was alone, lost and scared at the hospital, where he asked doctors to take betty off of life support. he told jurors that the decision was agonizing and that he wanted her to live. the next day, he had her cremated. the investigation into betty's death sparked another mysterious 1999 death of his first wife, jewel. shurmur said she fell down a flight of stairs while vacuuming. prosecutors now believe he beat her to death, as well. >> you look at jewel shurmur. she has two strikes to the right side of her head. a long, cylinder object. betty shurmur, she has two strikes to the right side of her head. all right? and lacerations looked similar. and the patterns look similar.

>> reporter: once this trial ends, he'll stand trial for jewel's murder. he's pled not guilty. >> if he's found not guilty in this case, it will embolden him to think he will be found not guilty again in the other case. if he's found guilty in this case, tough to know whether it night lead him to be more likely to try to enter into some sort of plea. >> reporter: as soon as closing arguments are done this morning, we expect the jury to begin deliberating as early as this afternoon. at the center of the debate will be shurmur's performance, which was said to be emotionless. he told the jury, he's not crying on the outside, but on the inside. now, to prince harry, out of afghanistan, after a four-month military tour. the 28-year-old, speaking out in an unprecedented interview, with no topic off-limits, including what you're seeing right there. the moment in the middle of the interview, when he was called back on duty. abc's lama hasan has the story. ♪

the game, i suppose. >> reporter: and there's the reminder that he is, well, a prince. a week after harry arrived, the base was attacked on his birthday. and the media and military started to re-evaluate whether their most famous member really could be kept safe. >> obviously, the papers were like, oh, this is all against me. no one really knows. the guys dealt with it really well. and it was on my birthday. it was a reality check. >> reporter: life away on the front lines has its drawbacks. william and kate announced their pregnancy when harry was away. >> i'm thrilled for both of them. it's about time. i can't wait to be an uncle. >> reporter: and sometimes the press gets it really wrong, which is harry's big beef. >> i didn't send a letter of congratulations by most of the papers. i spoke to my brother and her. both very well. and both very happy, obviously. >> reporter: the press has always been a thorn in harry and williams' side. >> come on. >> my father doesn't read it.

this risky contact with wild animals? >> children and wild animals is not a good mix. >> reporter: last year, the head of a gorilla conservation group shocked the public when he released these videos of his then-18-month-old daughter, playing and petting a 300-pound gorilla. and the legendary steve irwin drew heavy criticism for holding his young son too close to a crocodile. but like irwin's daughter, bindi, who followed in her dad's footsteps at age 8, little charlie has been taught a healthy respect for the danger involved. here, he watches his brother feed the crocodile from a safe distance. you hear him say be careful. >> you're jeopardizinining your around the animal at a young age. >> reporter: clearly, this is no ordinary kid from an ordinary family. but grim reports of a child
